We are delighted to announce the first annual

WOMEN AT THE CENTER FILM FESTIVAL! 

The Women at the Center Film Festival will showcase a variety of films that illustrate the challenges and resiliency of women around the world who are confronted by complex reproductive and sexual health issues. These stories capture the emotional and social consequences that barriers to healthcare services have on women, their families and communities by highlighting the often invisible social determinants that marginalize women.

Come by and see the inspirational stories of healthcare providers who have challenged and overcome systemic problems to offer greater reproductive healthcare to women, including those in low and middle income countries.

The festival movies will be showcased in the Exhibition.

The Women at the Center Film Festival will be curated by Emmy-winning filmmaker, Lisa Russell who curates and juries other global health film festivals including the Women Deliver Film Festival (Washington, DC 2010, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2013, Copenhagen, Denmark 2016 and Vancouver, Canada 2019), the UN’s SDGs in Action Film Festival (NYC 2018 and 2019), the first-ever Bhutan International Film Festival and more. 

The (in)visible Organ

Despite being an entirely preventable disease, cervical cancer takes the lives of hundreds of thousands of women globally. The (In)visible Organ documentary investigates how the design of technology impacts healthcare, especially when concerning an intimate part of the female body. By following the story of the Callascope innovation, this film unravels the power dynamics in gynecology and global health that have historically barred women’s access to cervical care. The (In)visible Organ brings in the deep human stories into biomedical engineering and medicine to tackle the roots of reproductive health inequity from within.

About The (In)visible Organ

The (In)visible Organ is a documentary film directed by Andrea Shinyoung Kim and produced by the Calla campaign, as part of a storytelling initiative to destigmatize female reproductive anatomy for cervical health outcomes. This project engages a diverse range of cultures and communities through the arts and storytelling to understand the unique and universal challenges that women face in their healthcare screening process.

Once upon a time…

About the Artist

Susana Ramirez is an illustrator from Barcelona. She studied Architecture but Art and drawing has always been part of her life. After studying in “L’escola de la Dona”* in Barcelona, she decided to pursue her dream of dedicating her life to illustration. Her passion is illustrating picture books for children of all ages.

About The Project

This project aims at re-telling some of the more well-known classical fairy tales with an alternative end, which comes from adding the Prevention and Health protection concepts to the classical narrative. These new stories illustrate what would have happened to the heroes and heroines of our childhood stories, if they had the necessary tools to deal with the perils on their path. Each of the four stories is split in four scenes: Introduction, Prevention, Conflict, and Alternative Outcome.

All four stories aim to show what a new bright horizon science can offer kids around the world, if we inform them and give them the necessary tools to face some of the many threats life can bring.
